A Heart Healthy Diet makes the difference...
What you eat can
make a real difference and help you lower blood cholesterol
and LDL and keep them low for life, even if you take medication too. It means:
-
eating more
good foods high in nutrition to help fight heart disease ( more fruit,
vegetables, grains and beans)
-
eating the right amounts of foods
that contain cholesterol, saturated fat and fat (meat, high fat dairy
products, eggs). It doesn't mean giving up all high fat foods, but
instead, learning how to fit those foods into your plan.
Numbers to Remember...
The
National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) panel of experts issued very
clear guidelines. It recommended two levels of diet. The type of
diet recommended for each individual varies depending upon their level of
cholesterol, LDL and the presence of other risk factors:
-
Diet
Step 1 is advised for those who have a blood cholesterol below 240, or a
LDL level between 130 and 159, and do not have any other risk factors.
This diet is low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
-
Diet
Step 2 is recommended for people with blood cholesterol above 239, or
anyone who has a cholesterol level above 200 plus two other risk factors.
This diet reduces saturated fat and cholesterol further for greater
benefits to those who need it most.
In every
case, making positive diet changes is the first step towards cholesterol reduction.
For best results, most should reduce dietary fat and cholesterol to at least
step 2 guidelines. In some cases, drugs may be required in addition to
dietary changes.
So, how do you
know if you're eating the right amount of good foods and maximizing your
diet's potential to help lower your risk factors for heart disease?
