Originally developed to help people with diabetes
and other chronic illnesses, the diabetic exchange diet
system

The exchange system tools we've developed allows you
to easily monitor what and how much you eat so that you get the
right balance of foods whether you want to lose weight or simply eat
well to optimize your health. Rather than counting calories, portion
sizes and the types of foods to choose are planned so that protein,
fat, and carbohydrate calories stay in proper balance. This is a
flexible system that anyone can use whether they have diabetes or
not, making it much easier to plan and prepare meals for other
household members. Your healthy diet plan doesn't require special
foods or supplements - eat like anyone else who wants to eat well!
How It Works
The number of exchanges of a certain type of food is determined by
the number of calories you need daily. Because we all have different
energy needs and each individual has different height, weight,
energy expenditure and specific health and fitness goals, a
dietitian will calculate your energy requirements and base your
exchanges on those calorie needs as well as consider your
weight loss requirements. We offer tables of exchange values for
many of the typical foods eaten in our member's area. That way when
you get your
PersonalDiets™ plan you can easily utilize your diet plan and make substitutions
for the foods you enjoy whether you use convenience or frozen foods
and other prepackaged foods, restaurant or fast foods or whole foods
we all eat from local grocery stores. If you have diabetes,
reaching a healthy body weight and getting the right balance of
foods can really help and your PersonalDiets™ plan can help you get the results you need. Since getting great
blood sugar control is so
important, we recommend and encourage all those with diabetes to
fine tune diet and exercise by working with a local diabetes
educator and local physician as well, who can monitor and change
your food and exercise based upon your individual blood sugar
patterns and other medical information - this is not
something you should do without the help of your local diabetes
experts and we cannot provide this level of help through the
internet!
